We are now accepting nominations for the third annual MIT Media Lab Disobedience Award, a no-strings-attached $250,000 cash prize. This award will go to a person or group engaged in what we believe is an extraordinary example of disobedience for the benefit of society. Award winner(s) will be announced in November, 2019.

With this award, we honor work that positively impacts society, and is consistent with a set of key principles, including:

  • Nonviolence
  • Creativity
  • Courage
  • Taking personal responsibility
Eligibility Requirements and Award Details
  • Recipient must be living at the time of nomination.
  • If an organization, they must be currently operational at the time of nomination.
  • Individuals, groups, or organizations cannot nominate themselves.
  • Recipient must have taken personal risk in order to effect positive change.
  • If a group of people or an organization is awarded the prize, they will receive one $250,000 check to distribute at their own discretion.
  • This award is open to any person or group in the world as long as they follow the principles of nonviolent disobedience to impact society in positive ways. All disciplines are eligible. 
Selection Process
We’ve gathered a diverse selection committee from the MIT Media Lab network—activists, scientists, designers, artists, and engineers—to review the nominations and select the award recipient(s).  
To Submit a Nomination
You must fill out the online nomination form between May 15 and July 31, 2019. All required fields must be completed. You will receive an email confirmation acknowledging your nomination. A member of the selection committee may contact you for more information, if your nomination is chosen as a finalist.

This nomination form is secure and the information submitted will not be shared publicly; it will be reviewed only by the selection committee. If your nominee is selected, we will contact him/her/them before making any announcement. We are mindful of privacy and the great risks involved in certain kinds of disobedience. We will not disclose any sensitive information publicly.
